The assassin used an antipersonnel warhead and the resulting flechettes took out three Congressmen, the mayor, four Secret Service agents, and several dozen bystanders. During an exchange of fire with the police and federal agents, the assassin was killed. Vice-President Patterson is sworn in within hours. He declares a day of mourning and imposes martial law on Cincinnati as federal troops comb through the city looking for accomplices. A government press release reveals the assassination was called for by a “revolutionary cult” calling itself the Army of the Satanic Order. Those who continued to resist were summarily executed to protect national security. Martial law is declared in all major cities. There are several reports of National Guard units mutinying when ordered to open fire on civilians, leading to urban firefights between National Guard and NERCC forces. Alaskan National Guard and civilian militia drive federal troops out of the state with Washington too preoccupied to react. The riots grow larger and more vicious than President Patterson ever expected, but the genuine nature of emergency only helps to draw more support for strong federal measures to be taken to restore order.

The ProGov relies on essential Alaskan resources and governor Adele Hawkins of Alaska has been busy making allies among other Pacific Rim nations. Aside from the backing of the naroctraficantes (or “traffs”), many factions in neighboring countries also show support for the PWT, seeing them as defenders of South American sovereignty from the norteamericanos. The country becomes a battleground, with ProGov troops stationed in many major Bolivian cities and PWT forces controlling the rural mountainous and forested regions.
2031.XXProGov President Patterson dies of natural causes. ProCon elects Adam Hammond as his successor. In his inaugural address, President Hammond coins the phrase “the permanent emergency” when referencing the ongoing state of affairs that make it impossible for ProGov lay aside its mandate and restore free elections.
2031.XXThe Russo-Japanese Economic Union and Chilentina use tactics ranging from lobbying to blackmail to force the International Rainforest Protection Pact of 2031 through all major governments. This creates an ecological reservation throughout the Amazon Basin. Much of the most productive and profitable farmland in Brazil is included and set aside strictly for the rain forest. With the exception of a few small indigenous tribes, all commercial and agricultural exploitation of this land is strictly forbidden. The International Ecological Protective Agency is created to enforce these measures and is staffed by personnel from all signatories. It employs 700 top ecologists, botanists, and zoologists as well as 3,000 crack ranger troops who server as game wardens, patrolling and enforcing the pact. 2037.05Broadcasts from Melbourne report the outbreak of a previously unknown extremely-virulent disease in Australia. Symptoms include high fever, respiratory distress, and brain damage leading to death. Within a week, Melbourne's Epidemic Control Center reports infections among their own ranks and communication ceases entirely the next day. No one has heard from Melbourne since. Epidemic starts spreading across the continent. All travel to and from the continent is halted to quarantine the outbreak. Other firstworld nations, remembering the impact of Tolliver's Disease, form a blockade and open fire on any refugee ships that ignore their warnings.
2037.09Last communication from Australia received. Remote observations of the continent show no signs of life. Entire population remaining on the continent is assumed dead due to the unknown pathogen.
2039.XXChilentina opens a major data haven in the Andes northeast of Rancaqua.

The quality and quantity of weapons in the hands of the Echeveristas point to the independence movement's backing by an unknown foreign nation or organization.
